  1. Insomnia (not being able to fall asleep or stay asleep)
  2. Having nightmares
  3. Waking up covered in sweat
  4. Kicking during sleep
  5. Constantly waking up and falling back asleep, possibly due to bad dreams
  6. Waking up and being easily startled and/or being confused about where you are
  7. Irregular sleep cycles

Often these symptoms will lead an individual to avoid sleeping as much as possible or turn to alcohol or other drugs to try and self medicate the problem.
