Alabama Veteran & Family Resources
Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs (ADVA)

The Alabama Department of Veterans Affairs provides statewide support for veterans, service members, and their families by helping them access both state and federal benefits. Through a network of county veterans service officers, ADVA assists with disability claims, pension applications, survivor benefits, burial assistance, and appeals. These local representatives play a key role in guiding families through the often complex VA system and ensuring that eligible veterans receive the compensation and services they have earned. In addition to claims assistance, ADVA also helps connect veterans with state veterans homes, cemeteries, and other long-term support services. For many families, this office serves as the primary entry point for understanding and accessing available benefits across Alabama.
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – Central Alabama Health Care System

The Central Alabama VA Health Care System provides comprehensive medical services to veterans across Alabama and surrounding regions through hospitals, outpatient clinics, and community-based care centers. Veterans can access primary care, mental health services, specialty treatment, rehabilitation programs, and geriatric care designed to support aging populations. The system also offers telehealth services, helping veterans in rural or underserved areas connect with providers without needing to travel long distances. In addition, the VA provides programs focused on chronic conditions, service-related injuries, and preventive care to improve long-term health outcomes. This healthcare network is a critical resource for ensuring Alabama veterans receive consistent, accessible, and veteran-centered medical care throughout their lives.
U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs – Veterans Benefits Administration (Regional Office)

The Veterans Benefits Administration (VBA) is responsible for administering federal benefits to veterans and their families, including disability compensation, VA pension programs, education benefits, home loan guarantees, and survivor support. Alabama veterans typically work through the VBA regional office in Montgomery or accredited representatives to file claims, submit documentation, and appeal decisions when necessary. This system ensures that veterans have access to financial and service-related support earned through military service. VBA also works closely with state and local veterans service organizations to help streamline the claims process and improve access to benefits across all eligible populations.
Alabama Area Agencies on Aging (Statewide Aging Support Network)
https://alabamaageline.gov/
The Alabama Department of Senior Services, through its AgeLine network and regional Area Agencies on Aging, provides a statewide system of support for older adults, including aging veterans and surviving spouses. While not exclusively a veterans program, this network plays an important role in connecting veterans to both community-based and VA-supported services. Through local agencies, individuals can access caregiver assistance, meal programs, transportation services, in-home care options, and long-term care planning resources designed to support independent living. Importantly, select Area Agencies on Aging in Alabama also participate in the Veterans Directed Care (VDC) program in partnership with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, which allows eligible veterans to direct their own care and, in some cases, hire family members or caregivers to assist with daily needs. These coordinated services help bridge the gap between state aging programs and federal VA benefits, ensuring that veterans and their families have access to flexible, person-centered support as they age.
